THE PROBLEM

Domain owners have achieved much success monetizing the visitor traffic arriving at their domains through the use of domain parking providers.  These parking providers would create a landing page filled with advertisements.  Whenever a visitor was redirected to one of these pages and clicked on one of the advertisements, the domain owner would generate revenue.  Very little effort was needed to implement this solution. 

For years, the use of domain parking providers worked well.  Owners were able to monetize their domains, while they waited for a buyer to arrive.  As important, the steady income stream became a key underpinning of a domain’s potential value.  The larger the income stream generated, the higher domain price realized.  It worked well until the 2008 global recession arrived.

Over the course of 2008, domain owners began to see their income streams decrease dramatically.  Not only was visitor traffic stagnant, but the revenue received from each visitor began to precipitously decline.  The steady income stream started to dissipate.  In some cases, the fall off in revenue has been so acute; it may no longer be enough to cover the annual domain registration fee.  This revenue compression has also resulted in downward pressure on domain sale prices. 

Fast forward to today.  Domain portfolio owners are faced with a seemingly impossible choice:  1.) Sell off their portfolios at fire sale prices, 2.) Run down the revenue until it no longer is enough to pay registration fees.  Then, let the domain registration lapse, 3.)
