     Konigsberg and its Castle

Konigsberg castle inspired many historians, who left their memories on the paper.

Russian historian and author of 18th century A. Bolotov wrote about Konigsberg castle that it was huge quadrangular building, standing on the mountain. Castle added to the whole city pompous (consequential) and magnificent appearance. The square chapel in the corner, how wrote Bolotov, was especially impressive with big flag on the top of it and guards, standing on their post every time of day and year.

Scientist Karl Rozenkranc in 1842 wrote about the castle, that the most fantastic and fabulous impression made the archive. It was the place where Royal German Society organized sessions. The Archive was decorated nicely with arches and beautiful gothic windows. Some of the windows and entrances were bricked up.

 K. Rozenkranc illustrated his impression of the visit. His fantasy was full of adventures and made pictures in the mind, how far this entry leaded in the earliest times and what secrets were hidden inside. In the archive his dreams moved to the past, that time when the castle was surrounded by ditch and drawbridges.

A. Rode in his book “Konigsberg and it`s collections” in 1937 wrote about the famous restaurant “Blutgericht” (Bloody Justice), which was located in the basement of the Konigsberg castle. He described location, where it was – in the north wing of the castle under the historical halls of the castle. Restaurant was accommodated in the spacious cellars.

The founder of the restaurant was Vilgelm Baltazar Schindelmeisser, who came in the Konigsberg from Salzburg. Since that time legends and stories were surrounded the “Blutgerich”, with its mysterious and dark halls of Teutonic times. And historians don`t want to take a risk to separate the truth from the fantasy.

Walter Franz in his book, published in 1938 wrote how he was impressed by the “Blutgericht”. In his work he mentioned the Konigsberg aphorism, saying that if citizen of East Prussia is lost in the Konigsberg, the place where he can be found is the tavern Blutgericht. Walter Franz explained that it was absolute truth and most of the excursions in the Konigsberg were finished by visiting the famous tavern in the Konigsberg castle.

The guest of the city by opinion of the V. Franz were impressed by the restaurant may be even more than by the Kant`s memorial place with his grave and by the Cathedral. The restaurant had hall with the name “Cell of the torture”, by the opinion of the V. Franz made the most exiting impression. Of cause, need to forget about real prisoners, who were kept in that hall till death in the medieval times.

G. Mulpford in his book “Konigsberg from A to Z. City glossary “(Berlin, 1970), made a picture of the entrance of the “German`s famous wine cellar with terrifying name”. The entrance was in a small annexe, built under the tournament gallery. The wine was served by wine waiters in the hamlets made by leather. There was a range of wine there – Reine, Moselle, Burgoo, Bordeaux and of cause famous Blutgericht #7 – bloody-red drink.

As V. Franz, described the hall was staffed by giant wood barrels of wine with carving decoration, made by master craftsman Lidke. It was dark there and day light could come only through narrow stained glass window. That dark ancient cave was lighted only by several fragile lamps.
